The
Story behind ....„The Dorset Songs“
Max & Laura Braun are siblings, who have been making music together
since their teenage years, - now some time ago. The years and life
have separated them. Max has stayed in Germany while Laura has made
London her home. But despite the distance they keep making music
together.
In the rainy late summer of 2008 they spent a few days in one of
their favourite places, a little village in Dorset, England, writing
and working out new songs together again after a few years of working
on other projects.
The intimate recordings of “The Dorset Songs” were made
in London upon their return from the countryside in only one day.
They were initially meant only as a demo. However with their few
homemade copies gone and under the continued pressure of friends
Max and Laura decided to release the recordings on a bigger scale.
Inspired by the music director Michael Fragstein, of Büro Achter
April, made a hauntingly beautiful animated video to Max and Laura’s
song "Hat", which will be seen at festivals across Europe
this year.
The simple instrumentation of acoustic fingerstyle guitar and vocals
often sung in harmony as well as the melancholy lyrics create a
folksy mood. However elements of a jazzier nature also play a part
in this duo’s style. Laura’s voice has a soft and old-fashioned
quality reminiscent of 1950's vocal jazz, which together with the
harmonic intricacy of Max’s guitar playing takes their music
beyond folk and into a realm of its own.
